Taiko Japanese Cuisine @ Mont Kiara Shoplex, KL
Previously known as Ramen Taiko, Taiko Japanese Cuisine is a quirky name for a restaurant because it implies that they are the “big brother” in Japanese food. Well, at least for those who speak Cantonese. But the word ‘taiko’ actually refers to the Japanese drum as seen in the restaurant’s logo. After a change of management and menu, you will ...

Departure Lounge Cafe @ Solaris Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur
Many people seem to give Departure Lounge‘s (DL) breakfast a favourable review but again, I find myself on the opposite side of the fence. Coffee was the only reason why I wanted to try DL, and it should be yours too.
As for their breakfast, keep your expectations low because it was mediocre at best. In all fairness, maybe the food quality was better in their earlier days because a close friend of mine actually warned me (before I went) that their standard has dropped drastically.
Actually Departure Lounge came highly recommended to me not long ago by a coffee enthusiast who owns his own cafe in PJ. Besides, it is also worth mentioning that DL has trained many award winning local baristas and the list includes JH Yee who previously worked at espressoLAB and now helms the Top Brew Coffee Bar.
There is no doubt that the coffee here is fine. So DL makes a great cozy place to hang out over a cuppa with friends, or simply pick one of the many travel guidebooks and research on your next holiday destination.
DL’s ever popular Do-It-My-Way (DIMW) American breakfast is a customizable platter with your choice of 3, 5 or 7 items depending on how hungry you are. How the system works is that you pick up a card from the counter, state the the number of items and tick accordingly with an erasable marker pen. Fresh mushroom is considered an upgrade and cost extra $$. The idea is neat and all but they really need to consider replacing some of the cheap tasting stuff, especially the awful fish fingers.
Upper Deck @ RM12.90 – a very generic sandwich so I don’t get the big hoo-haa about it among some people. You can actually make this at home and it will probably taste better. Well, unless you are a completely incompetent cook.
Likes: Nice and affordable coffee, cozy ambiance, cafe concept, travel guidebooks
Dislikes: Pricey but cheap tasting food, staff hanging out at counter, lack of parking

Delicious Ramen @ Menya Kamikaze, 1 Mont Kiara
1 Mont Kiara is a small shopping mall but here you will find a couple of interesting independent restaurants. When we stumbled on Menya Kamikaze we thought it was just another ramen joint. Furthermore it was empty which immediately signalled a warning. Luckily our instincts got the better of us and as a result, we were rewarded with one of the best ramen we have had in KL since Marutama.
At Menya Kamikaze, ramen is not only served in soup. You could also try Tsukemen-style ramen, which is basically a soup-less ramen. How it works is that cold ramen is to be dipped into a bowl of hot dipping soup for a warm instead of hot meal. In Japan, the idea of Tsukemen-style ramen was conceived when people felt the weather was too hot to enjoy ramen during summer. Considering it’s practically always summer in KL, this could work here.
That being said, we decided to stick with the soup ramen which is available in the basic pork, miso pork, Tokyo soy sauce, special miso paste, and spicy pork flavor. Some flavors has a predefined amount of toppings at different prices such as ajitama (basic), kamikaze (1 additional slice of roasted pork) and chashu (3 slices of roasted pork but no egg) For non-ramen eaters, other dishes offered include gohan like Japanese fried rice, curry rice, rice with teriyaki pork and a variety of traditional fried dishes.
Seeing that the chashu version does not come with my favorite marinated egg I opted for the Kamikaze Pork Soup Ramen @ RM25. One sip of the milky white soup was enough to know that it is truly something special. One bite into the ridiculously soft (and fatty), flavorful chashu was all I needed to know I will be a return customer. Everything else was wonderful too, which was really just the icing on the cake.

Monthly specials give a reason for customers to return and the Black Spicy Ramen @ RM26 is one of them. It is only limited to 30 bowls a day though.

Lewisgene Espresso @ Solaris Mont Kiara, KL
Lewisgene was one of the earlier cafes to enter the industry, way before we were hit by the wave of cafes mushrooming around the city. At that time, I think the activity of “café hopping” was still unheard of.
They are perhaps even more well known for their barista’s talent in coffee art. There is something therapeutic about the sight of a cuppa with nice latte art. It makes you feel good and as a result, the coffee tastes better, even if it’s just your mind telling you that.

Among the dozen types of coffee and tea offered (they have three menu boards just to display them) here, the caffe mocha @ RM12.90 is more popular than the rest for a good reason. It is undeniably cool looking for sporting an elegant and symmetrical design of a spider web. This drink was reputed to propel Lewisgene into stardom and now everyone wants a cup for themselves.
A cappuccino here goes for RM11.90, that’s about RM2-3 above the market’s median price. Again the coffee art was perfect and left an impression on us. Taste wise however, it was alright I guess – nothing special.
Coffee aside there’s quite a number of food available such as breakfast sets, sandwich, salad, waffles and not to mention the various cakes in the display chiller cabinet. From what I saw everything looked good (at least on the surface) especially the waffles. Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves and there was such an air of happiness in the room.

The alfresco area and the view across the road. Popular with the working crowd nearby, this coffee house gets full fast (and most of them don’t leave quick too) so it’s always a good idea to be early to secure a table of your choice.
